Research Seminar II: Data Analysis, report and communicate results

Course goals

The entire course will be taught in English.


The aim of the consecutive research seminars 1 and 2 is to guide second-year SHP students through the complex tasks of designing, conducting and reporting the empirical research for their MSc thesis. A particular objective of SHP12 is to encourage students to think about and engage in science communication. 

By the end of SHP12 students have…

1. conducted empirical research
2. analyzed and reported the data
3. completed the thesis, including a discussion of the findings
4. wrote an engaging science story about their thesis research
5. presented the science story about their thesis research

Content

In Research Seminar II (SHP12), the primary focus is to guide students through the tasks of conducting, analyzing, and reporting empirical research for their thesis. These tasks involve close collaboration with the supervisor and adherence to the format of a specific journal article.

Another objective of SHP12 is to learn to structure and present research in an engaging way. Reading a scientific paper is sometimes boring. We may struggle to pay attention to a lecture or research talk, even when the topic is interesting and relevant. These are not only problems of content but also of form: the structure of the presentation may not be optimal.
