- Following a course from other Utrecht University (research) master programs, or an equivalent program from other universities. Such a course should make a unique contribution above the courses included in the regular EdSci program.
- Doing an internship during which students participate in ongoing research a) within one of the EdSci research groups; b) in a national or international research institute; c) in a more policy-oriented institute (e.g., Ministry of Education, Educational Inspectorate); or d) a more practice-oriented (e.g., consultancy) organization. The goal of the internship is to get hands-on experience with doing research-related tasks. During the internship, students learn how a team or research group functions, to collaborate in a research or multidisciplinary team and to cooperate with colleagues, to critically reflect on their functioning as researchers within a team, to collect and process data (data entry, scale construction, development of code book), to report results to various stakeholders, to present (orally and written), and how research connects to educational policy and practice. Note that EdSci10 & 11 can be combined into one substantial internship. Doing an internship abroad is encouraged.
- Students can use their electives for organizing and doing data collection for their thesis project during a research internship under the supervision of the thesis supervisors.
- Students who opt for the clinical track do an internship under the supervision of a licensed clinical teacher. During the clinical internship, students can also complete the diagnostic case studies required to obtain a clinical qualification (Basisaantekening Diagnostiek). Other professional skills developed in this internship concern communication with children, parents, and schoolteachers.
- Students who combine EdSci with another one-year master (e.g., Youth, Education, and Society) or another research master (e.g., MSBBSS) use courses from those programs as electives.
