Course goals

The Research Seminar I aims to stimulate the development of a researcher’s mind, which includes knowledge of doing research (e.g., about different research phases), research skills (e.g., systematic ways of working, reviewing scientific papers, replying to review comments on a paper), as well as an academic and ethical attitude (e.g., curiosity, open mindedness, being self-critical, observing ethical principles and privacy protection rules). Specific skills aimed at in this course are:
  • Detecting, discussing and solving problems encountered during the writing of the thesis proposal.
  • Listening and giving feedback to others, and processing feedback given by others on the thesis proposals.
  • Reviewing a manuscript of a scientific paper and writing a rebuttal to reviewers’ comments on a manuscript of a scientific paper.
  • Following formal academic guidelines, including research ethics and APA style (7th edition).
  • Understanding and adopting rules of ethical conduct and scientific integrity in doing research.
  • Understanding pertinent issues of social and behavioral research, including the educational research, such as the replicability of study findings, the critical importance of the implementation context, and the theory-practice gap.

Content

The Research Seminar (in total 7.5 EC) takes place during the second year of the research master programme. It runs parallel to the electives (EdSci10 and 11) and the research master thesis (EdSci13) and helps students – through readings, discussions and debate – to develop their academic skills and to solve actual research problems encountered while preparing (12A) and conducting (12B) the master’s thesis research. The course has scheduled meetings every two weeks. The topics are flexible to a certain extent. The EdSci12A meetings support the preparation of the final thesis proposal and discuss topics such as research integrity and ethics / data management and privacy protection / societal impact of educational research / theory-practice gap. Further, students, supported by the coordinator, organise meetings and invite for example guest speakers or EdSci alumni in order to orient themselves on possible professional future careers. In a meeting, either the course coordinator, students or a guest speaker presents a subject, shows pointers to resources, and sets assignments.
