Course goals

AIM OF THE COURSE
The Research Seminar aims to stimulate the development of a researcher’s mind, which includes knowledge of doing research (e.g., about different research phases), research skills (e.g., systematic way working), as well as an academic attitude (e.g., curiosity, open mindedness, self-critical). In addition, specific skills aimed at in this course are:

· Detecting, discussing and solving problems encountered during the preparation, data gathering, analysis, and reporting stage of a research project;

· Participating in a research group;

· Listening and giving feedback to others;

· Following formal academic guidelines, including research ethics and APA style (7^th edition).

Content

The Research Seminar (in total 7.5 EC) takes place during the second year of the research master programme. It runs parallel to the electives (EdSci10 and 11) and the research master thesis (EdSci 13) and helps students – through readings, discussions and debate – to develop their academic skills and to solve actual research problems encountered while preparing (12A) and conducting (12B) the master’s thesis research. The course has scheduled meetings every two weeks. The topics are flexible to a certain extent. The EdSci12B meetings focus on academic writing, analyses and scientific integrity as well as preparing a data package to support open science. In a meeting, either the course coordinator, students or a guest speaker presents a subject, shows pointers to resources and sets assignments. Students regularly read each other’s papers, give peer feedback (an important component of this course), and present their work. Time is allotted to providing individual feedback to students.
