Course goals
After this course, you will have practiced the following research abilities:
- Searching and reviewing literature
- Using knowledge of previous research to formulate research questions and hypotheses
- Designing a method to examine your research questions
- Selecting data to study your research questions, if necessary after collecting and processing the data (data entry, scale construction, development of codebook)
- Preparing to archive your data according to the relevant protocol (see also DaSCA 13 manual)
- Choosing analytic strategies
- Presenting your research plans (orally and written) to an academic audience
- Presenting your research plans (written) to a non-academic audience
At the end of Research Seminar I students should have completed a proposal for their MSc thesis that will be submitted for approval to the Board of Studies.
Content
During this course each student will write a research proposal for his/her master’s thesis project under supervision of one of the senior researchers involved in DaSCA. During four online group meetings the context of writing the proposal will be used to inform you about and train you in developing and presenting research ideas and hypotheses. The course consist of 4 elements:
- Individual meetings with your thesis supervisor.
- Instruction on and practicing with writing scientific and popular English and provide peer feedback on the proposal.
- Presenting and discussing (the progress on writing) your thesis proposal. Each student will orally present his/her research plans and give and receive (peer) feedback on both the content and the presentation itself.
- Intervision on what is going well, and what you are struggling with in designing your study and writing your thesis proposal.
