Research seminar II

Course goals

In this course the context of conducting the MSc thesis research and writing the thesis is used to inform and train second-year DASCA students about the dissemination of research findings. In general, the course consists of three elements:

1. Discussion and feedback regarding the progress on analysing data and writing the MSc thesis. Students will discuss all aspects of completing their research and writing their MSc thesis, ranging from implementing their research proposal, monitoring the analysis of the data and the empirical progress of their thesis project, to writing their article (thesis) and defending their thesis. During the meetings, students give and receive feedback on their progress and learn to review others’ work.
2. Instruction and training on disseminating research findings. During short lectures and group discussions students will learn about reviewing the work of others, the reviewing process after submitting an article, and presenting results via a poster and a vlog.
3. Intervision on what is going well and what students are struggling with in completing their research and writing their MSc thesis.

This course is the second part of the research seminar (DaSCA 9b), and constitutes a logical follow up on the first part (DaSCA 9a) during which students wrote their research proposal. Now that the data for the MSc research have (mostly) been gathered, during this course students will be engaged with analyzing their data and writing their MSc thesis. After this part of the research seminar, students should have attained the following research abilities:

• Presenting the methods section and analysis plan of a research paper
• Reporting and interpreting data in relation to research questions, existing research, and theory
• Discussing the findings and conclusions of a research paper
• Providing detailed and constructive feedback on other student’s work incl. a full manuscript review
• Giving clear and concise oral and poster presentations
• Preparing a vlog about the progress and outcomes of the project in laymen’s terms
