Course goals
The Master’s thesis is the final evaluation of research competence and should reflect that the learning outcomes of the programme have been realised. Based on an up-to-date knowledge of methodology and statistics (Dublin descriptor knowledge and understanding) the students have to explore the subject of their thesis and show that they can develop new methodology and statistics, evaluate methodology and statistics, and apply methodology and statistics in a context (Dublin descriptors applying knowledge and understanding and making judgements) that is relevant for behavioural, biomedical, and social scientists. They have to do that in the format of the intended journal for publication (Dublin descriptor communication) and have to show that based on the knowledge they acquired during this master they are able to explore a new subject into depth (Dublin descriptor learning skills). With the thesis they must hand in a research archive that contains all the material.The criteria for the evaluation of the master’s thesis are:
- the scope and focus of the article are on a research problem that is embedded in a relevant field of our master and should reflect state of the art in that particular research field;
- a theoretical elaboration of the research problem;
- theoretically relevant findings have been evaluated through an appropriate method;
- appropriate reporting of the thesis research according to the accepted standards for empirical articles.
Content
The master’s thesis serves as the final evaluation of research competence to demonstrate that the learning outcomes of the programme have been realised, regarding academic skills, theoretical knowledge, ethical responsibility, scientific integrity, methodological training, and research capabilities. The thesis should be well embedded in previous research and literature on the topic of the thesis, include a theoretical elaboration of the research problem, and empirically test some implications of the applied theories. The thesis is typically about 6,000 words long (a standard set by most of the scientific journals in this field) and has the format of an empirical journal article.
