Course goals

The internship will enable students to:

  • Gather empirical data for the masterthesis
  • Link academic theory to practice
  • Apply knowledge, skills and experience to a work environment
  • Demonstrate professional skills in the workplace
  • Build and maintain positive professional relationships
  • Demonstrate awareness of issues that are specific to a certain policy field, institutional environment or organization
  • Develop self-understanding, self-discipline, reflective capabilities, maturity and confidence
  • Develop strong networking/mentoring relationships within a professional and potential future work environment.
Together, the internship and labour market preparation (course code 201600012) and the Master's thesis (course code 201600013) form a whole and are worth a total of 30 credits.

The internship is designed to receive experience in applying theories learned in the curriculum to specific professional contexts. The internship will heighten students awareness of  issues that are specific to a certain professional environment or policy field. The internship is an opportunity to not only use and develop knowledge and skills that are specific to the internship organization, but also to enhance some of the skills that are transferable to any professional work setting. The internship can give you valuable information in making decisions about the direction of future studies or employment.

In principle, the internship and policy research will take place in combination. This can only be waived in exceptional cases. Agreement about the policy research to be undertaken will take place at the beginning of the internship and a suitable supervisor will be assigned. A project plan and a strict timetable will be discussed with the assigned supervisor.

During the internship students are expected to gather empirical data with which to write their master thesis.
