Course goals

Course objectives
This course comprises a specific, in-depth component as organized by the department of Clinical Psychology and a smaller, more general component as organized by the faculty of Social and Behavioural Sciences. Each component has its own learning goals.

Departmental component: Clinical Psychology (CP)
The overall goal of the departmental component is to help students develop into academic professionals within our beautiful field of Clinical Psychology. During this course, students will learn to integrate their academic skills into their future work, with the ultimate goal to improve current mental health care. By the end of the course students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate an understanding of being an academic professional and its relevant skills.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of several broader themes that are relevant in our field, such as cultural sensitivity, treatment development, clinical decision making and ethical decision making.
  • Demonstrate an ability to critically reflect on current mental health care, its challenges, and opportunities for improvement.
Specific learning goals for each of the five blocks can be found in the overviews on Brightspace.

Faculty component: Social and Behavioural Sciences (FSBS)
In addition, the faculty component organizes a CareerCrafting course -including two online sessions and one on campus training- to prepare students for (future) internship and/or job applications. By the end of this course students should be able to:
  • Demonstrate skills that are relevant for seeking job vacancies and preparing job interviews.

Content

Content
Departmental component: Clinical Psychology (CP)
This component will offer five blocks covering broader themes (e.g., cultural sensitivity, clinical decision making and ethical decision making) that are highly relevant for being an academic professional. Each block includes various teaching formats:
  • Individual preparation
  • Unsupervised peer meeting
  • Working group meeting
  • Expert meeting
  • Individual portfolio assignment
During the course, we will discuss various types of psychopathology and treatment guidelines and, most importantly, critically reflect on our field and identify opportunities for improving current mental health care.

Faculty component: Social and Behavioural Sciences (FSBS)
This component includes several (online) modules on skills that are helpful for students’ professional career development. Modules focus on, for example, seeking job vacancies and preparing job applications. Students also participate in one on campus training session.

Assessment
Departmental component: Clinical Psychology (CP)
The course objectives of the departmental component will be assessed through an academic portfolio, which comprises assignments that are linked to the five central themes (e.g., cultural sensitivity, clinical decision making and ethical decision making) of the course.

Faculty component: Social and Behavioural Sciences (FSBS)
The course objective of the faculty component will be assessed through the participation in two online modules and one on campus training session on students’ professional career development.
