Course goals

The entire course will be taught in English. This also includes assignments and exams.

During the internship students work as a psychologist in one of the occupational or research fields in Social or Health Psychology. The learning goals of the internship are the following:
  1. learning to apply knowledge and skills that are acquired in the field of Social or Health Psychology
  2. further development of professional skills that are relevant to the field of Social or Health Psychology.
Professional and scientific reflection is an important aspect of these learning goals.

Correspondence between the evaluation and learning goals

The general and individual learning goals of the internship are addressed in an individual internship report and during performance appraisals by the supervisor in the internship organisation. The grade for the internship is based on the individual internship report, the performance of the student, and reflection of the student on his/her internship activities. To this end, the internal supervisor (a staff member of the SHOP department) will consult the external supervisor in the organisation. The following aspects will be evaluated: professional skills (work performance), application of theory, work attitude, and quality of the internship report. It will be assessed whether the student is capable of a clear and adequate report of the work performance and learning experiences, and is capable of reflecting upon their own functioning during the internship.

Content

Students can choose between a practical internship, a research internship, or a combination of both. Most students opt for a practical internship in an organisation. In a practical internship, the main purpose is to familiarise oneself with the occupational practice in the field of social or health psychology, such as working with behavior-specialists and consultants or learning about the field of public communication, advertising, and (marketing) research. The purpose of a research internship is to conduct research in the field of Social or Health Psychology. A research internship can be performed at the university or in another scientific research institute. Moreover, students can choose for a training internship at the university, whereby they are trained to become a trainer in professional communication skills.

Internships are supervised in the organisation by a professional (preferably a psychologist) who is expert in the activities to be performed. Students also receive supervision from a staff member of the SHOP department. We advise students to start their search for an internship as early as possible and to look for internships beyond that is provided on Brightspace. The regulations concerning the internship can be found on Blackboard. Further information about internships can be obtained via the coordinator of the Master's track Social Influence and Health Promotion, Dr. Madelijn Strick. She can be contacted via m.strick@uu.nl.
