Content
This course will provide you insight into policies and policy actors in the domain of healthcare. Care needs in post-industrial countries are increasing as a result of demographic changes such as reduced fertility and the relative size of the aging population. This raises new challenges and triggers the development of new policies. This course addresses societal changes, the subsequent policy processes and the role of policy actors.
First, looking at current trends in healthcare, such as decentralization and privatization, we ask critical questions about the future of healthcare and the potential limits to it. Second, we investigate the consequences of healthcare policies on social inequalities and social cohesion. Specifically we delve into inequalities in the design and provision of healthcare based on: age, gender and race. Concluding with policy about how to increase the (labor market) participation of individuals with disabilities.
Guest lectures from the field will shed light on the most up to date concerns and questions that are being dealt with in the field of healthcare. Typically, guest lectures will come from various and (even) conflicting domains of healthcare to ensure you get a wider array of viewpoints and a good idea about the interplay between actors.
At the end of the course you will be writing a research proposal based on the theoretical and real life insights you gained during the course.
