Beschrijving
Course goals
- in-depth knowledge of models of cognitive domains and how to interpret potential impairments within these models
- knowledge about neuroanatomy and neuroimaging techniques
- knowledge about the effect of various aetiologies/pathologies on neuropsychological functioning
- knowledge of (advanced) research methods used in the field of neuropsychology
- interpret behaviour (as presented in clinical practice) within theoretical models of cognitive domains
- design experimental neuropsychological tasks to address these hypotheses
- present and debate a neuropsychological case and assessment in front of peers
- take ethical considerations into account
- adopt a professional working attitude regarding planning, handling deadlines, and combining workload of different tasks
Relation between assessment and objective
Written exam
The exam will test students by means of open questions.
Students are tested on their knowledge concerning the topics that have been addressed during the lectures and in the study material. Students will be tested on in-depth knowledge of cognitive neuropsychology and on insights about the methods used in neuropsychological research.
Group assignment
Students are presented with a neuropsychological case and are challenged to think of new, experimental methods to assess cognition, based on the acquired theoretical knowledge, and to further deepen their understanding. They have to write a report and present their case in front of peers. For this assignment, students have to integrate the components that form the basis of neuropsychology, such as neuroanatomy, cognitive models, patients’ reports and research methods.
Content
This course will use blended learning, that is, a mix of face-to-face contact of students and teachers in combination with other educational techniques amongst which are online modules that challenge students to be actively engaged with the material. The lectures include interactive components to create a safe learning environment in which students are encouraged to actively use the presented knowledge and to learn from each other. Throughout the course, the students will work together on an assignment regarding a neuropsychological case. This assignment will result in a report and presentation on the disorder, which will discuss aspects, covered in the lectures, ranging from clinical symptoms and diagnosis, models of cognitive function, to neuroanatomy and underlying aetiology, decision making and ethical considerations.
