Course goals
After completion of the developmental neuropsychology course the student has:
• insight into the theoretical models of brain development and plasticity.
• knowledge concerning cognitive, motor, and behavioural disorders based on disfunctions of the developing central nervous system
• been introduced into the assessment and treatment of cognitive and behavioral disorders in children.

Relations between learning goals and assignments
Learning goal 1 and 2 will be assessed with a written exam. Learning goal 3 will be assessed with an individual assignment. In this assignment, the student gains experience with scoring and interpreting a number of neuropsychological tests. The student also has to administer neuropsychological tasks to a child and write a report about the results of the assessment.

Content
It is important to notice that these kind of disorders can be quite different from disfunctions caused by damage to the adult brain. Knowledge on which developmental neuropsychology is based, comes from research on the development of the nervous system from conception until adulthood and from research on genetic, biological and environmental factors, which influence brain development.
Currently, there is increasing acknowledgment that the brain is still developing even after birth and that it can be considered mature not earlier than adulthood. To understand the consequences of a developmental disorder or an early lesion, one needs knowledge about normal brain development. Moreover, insight into the effects of early brain damage on the structural and functional development of the brain is necessary. The focus in this course is on different cognitive disorders and the different syndromes that can lead to these disorders. The following groups will be discussed during the course: children with traumatic brain injury, children with a brain tumor, children with psychiatric, language, and or behavioural disorders, and children with structural brain disorders. Furthermore, attention will be paid to neuropsychological assessment and treatment in children.
