Course goals
The Research Seminar has the aim to develop the following skills:- Develop a research proposal that should lead to a master thesis.
- Arrange ethical clearance for your project (privacy, data collection, data management).
- Being able to write an academic paper in the field of MSBBSS.
- Being able to create and give a scientific presentation.
- Orally present and discuss research progress.
- Present research progress. This includes literature research and bibliography management; applying style rules according to the journal intended for publication of the master thesis; effective writing and effective graphical and tabular presentation of results.
- Consulting with researchers that have questions with respect to methods and statistics.
In order to pass the course, the final grade must be 5.5 or higher, each separate grade must be 5.5 or higher, and all PASS/FAIL items should be fulfilled.
At the end of the course the student should be well-prepared to produce a thesis written in the format of a scientific paper.
Content
The course “Research Seminar” takes place in the first and second semester of the second year. It runs along:
To ensure enough personal attention while monitoring the thesis progress throughout the year, the class is divided in subgroups (denoted mentor groups) of approximately 5 students. Students within a mentor group will also, regularly, provide peer feedback to one or more members of their group. Other meetings are with all students, or, with half of the students. See the schedule below for an overview of all meetings throughout the academic year.
- “Markup languages” (MSBBSS10);
- “Preparation master’s thesis” (MSBBSS12);
- “Master’s thesis” (MSBBSS13).
