Course goals

The aim of the clinical internship is to gain experience with daily work in a clinical setting to support the mental health of children and adolescents and their families. The work for individual clients and their families will consist of determination of indications for specific treatment forms, diagnostic assessments, and participation in treatments. In addition, the internship students will regularly attend meetings at the institution. The students will also participate in Juveniles and the Law and Ethics , part of the course Academic Professional (AP) of the master Clinical Child Family and Education Studies (CCFES), which also entails an exam and an assignment.
The Dutch students who want to receive the ‘Diagnostic Registration’ must report on three cases they worked with during their clinical internship, according to the requirements provided by NIP or NVO. In these reports students will reflect on their practical experience, but they also need to focus on both potential research questions relevant for their work in practice, as well as potential improvements in practice, from a scientist practitioner’s point of view.
After the internship, students will have gained their first experience in assessment and treatment of children and adolescents with mental health problems, in order to be able to work as scientist practitioners and be able to enter post master education, when they have finished the DaSCA research master. They will be able to collaborate with professionals working in mental health institutions. In addition, they will be able to share their knowledge concerning scientific methods and scientific data from recent studies on topics relevant for the clients or patients assessed and treated at the institution.

To qualify for the clinical track, students must have a bachelor’s degree in pedagogical science or psychology with a study program that meets the requirements of the NIP and NVO for post master clinical education. Please note that the clinical route is only relevant for Dutch speaking students, as this route qualifies for the post master education for clinical professions in the Netherlands. In other countries other requirements apply. Students should be able to understand and speak and write in Dutch.
