Course goals
This course is taught in English. For Dutch speaking students, parts of the course may be offered in Dutch. See the course manual for further details.
1) To acquire understanding of how different paradigms are embedded in the design and implementation of interventions and policies in the areas of Youth, Education and Society.
2) To acquire knowledge and understanding of the (international) policy context, concerning children and young people, upbringing and education as related to these paradigms.
3) To gain the skills required to apply the course knowledge in a field of practice related to interventions and policy in a collaborative context.
4) To gain the (argumentative) skills and theoretical perspectives to be able to make international comparisons as related to goal 1, 2 and 3.
5) To gain the skills required to apply the course knowledge in the writing of a scientific paper.
This course builds upon the YES01 and YES02 courses and you are asked to put your theoretical knowledge and comparative analysis skills into practice. More concretely, the goal of this course is to apply your knowledge on the different paradigms discussed in YES01 to concrete interventions. You will do this by choosing two existing interventions related to your track (due to track-focus, YEP student may also choose policies). You compare these interventions with one another and you will analyse which paradigms form the base of the intervention. We define an intervention as goal directed and programmatic attempt to intervene in a social practice, in this case related to youth and/or education. For this assignment you will gather information through desk research but also by talking to developers or experts in the field of your chosen projects.
Content
In this practical you will gain practical experience with applying scientific knowledge in a group assignment such as designing or evaluating an intervention, as related to a particular field, depending on your track. The field is thus different for different students and might be either the field of youth care, international development or inclusive education. You will work in small groups and will attend feedback sessions with your fellow students and instructor. During these feedback sessions, you will get the chance to work on your group assignment, ask questions, and receive feedback from your fellow students and instructor.
The assignment is carried out by a group of max five students and is concluded with a collective paper and a short presentation during the last session.
