Course goals

The aim of the course is to introduce you to bio inspired approaches and the philosophy behind it. In addition, you will learn and apply a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA), construct a Business Model Canvas (BMC) and perform an Ecological Quick Scan. This will help you to function in a multidisciplinary team as a biologist at a design and innovation table.

Learning objectives:
At the end of the course, the student should be able to
  • identify the main concepts that inform Bio-Inspired Research and Design
  • interpret the outcomes of your own products and ideas concerning the potential contribution it delivers to the creation of a sustainable circular economy and society
  • reflect on you own role and actions as part of a research and/or design process.
  • connect  literature from different disciplines to a scientifically formulated problem (multidisciplinarity.)
  • communicate research and /or design results to a wider()non-scientific) audience in a comprehensible manner.
  • critically review literature that addresses contemporary problems and relate it to the course content and your own opinions.
Skills:
  • Value Proposition
  • Life Cycle Assessment
  • Business Model Canvas
  • Ecological Quick Scan
  • Giving and receiving feedback (incl. peer reviewing)
  • Communicating, collaborating and work together (on-line)

Content

The course will consist of a theoretical introduction into bio-inspired approaches that necessitate a systems view on science and skill training, LCA, BMC and ecological quickscan. Before the course starts we will ask you to do a small pre-assignment that will be used in the course.

From the 3rd week onwards, the Value proposition, LCA Ecological Quick scan and BMC will be done in groups until the 10th week.  These activities will be guided by lectures and meetings.

Optional for students in other Master’s programmes GSLS: Yes
