Introduction to Science based companies

Course goals

Leerdoelen voor de cursus In this course, students will get introduced to - The entire program of the SBM master (year 1 & 2) - Research/laboratory management  -Science based entrepreneurship  -Topics of the 2nd year Business Course (FBE) - Patent Law  -Human Drivers -Personal development At the end of the course, students should be able to: -recognize the management dynamic in a research group/company -identify their strengths and preferred role in an organization -use a patent database -contribute to discussions related to ethics of (bio)technology

Description of content
Introduction of basic business principles of science based companies. Lecturers, guest lectures and alumni will give lectures and workshops on Patent Law, Entrepreneurship, Ethics etc.  Also in this course the students will be stimulated to work on their development of insight in their own motivation, preferences and perspectives. This will increase their effectiveness in the workplace and will help them to make career choices.

Assignments

1..The students will individually give an overview of the output of a science based multinational and a science based start-up company. The students will list the main products, philosophy, slogan, vision statement and purpose of the companies.


2. The students will present an overview of results from their self-analysis in an assignment:
- A list of personality traits (values, attributes, talents, ambitions and motivations)
- A list of team roles (using Belbin’s roles for reference)
3. The students will make a group assignment on starting a company. For this the basics of patent law are applied and the patent database has to be used.
