Course goals

At the end of the course the student:
1. Collaborate with stakeholders from different domains, disciplines, and social groups, including scientists, medical specialists, patients, society, industry, and policymakers, to design solutions to health challenges in a transdisciplinary manner.
2. Develop and translate cross-sectoral, context-specific strategies/interventions within the continuum of fundamental science to pharmaceutical industry, policymaking, and social, economic, cultural, and environmental determinants of health problems.
3. Demonstrate comprehensive and critical awareness of health challenges and their interconnections with One Health and Environmental & Planetary Health, including ethical approaches, personalized disease management, and societal needs.
4. Formulate hypotheses based on current literature and cutting-edge data, identify appropriate methodologies, and communicate proposals to stakeholders and society in both written and oral formats.
5. Analyse the principles of evidence-based translational medicine, including its application from bench to bedside and society, and vice versa.
6. Summarize the key concepts and theories of the study subject, including the pathophysiology, prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and management of both communicable and non-communicable diseases with high disease burden and mortality, as well as their associated risk factors.
7. Reflect on your own personal development, and potential cognitive biases and assumptions in the context of interdisciplinary and international work.

Do you want to do interdisciplinary research with students from all over Europe? Join the course to work on this year’s challenge on new approach methodologies bridging immunology, inflammation, and experimental innovation!

Interdisciplinary collaboration
This  dynamic, challenge-based Master's course is co-hosted by the University of Montpellier, University of Barcelona, Åbo Akademi University, and Utrecht University. Working in international and interdisciplinary teams of students, you will develop research proposals, guided by experienced supervisors and leading researchers from all four universities. This student-driven course equips you with essential research and professional skills, preparing you for internships and future careers in academia, industry, and healthcare.

Cutting-edge challenges
In the 2026/27 edition, you will focus on the following theme: "From autoimmunity to new approach methodologies: bridging immunology, inflammation and experimental innovation", exploring cutting-edge treatments and innovative solutions. The universities have an international network of research hubs available that can help you to tackle this challenge.

Hybrid international module
At the start of the course, you will attend a fully-funded on-site conference in Utrecht (Friday 13th of November), where you will gain firsthand insights from patients, advocacy groups, clinicians, industry stakeholders, and scientists. This conference will also be offered as one of the LSA seminars!

In the module, you will collaborate in a hybrid way with students from the participating countries and work on a research grant proposal. The disciplines that have been involved in this module previously include chemistry, biology, biomedical sciences, epidemiology, pharmacy, and many more.
Throughout the module, you will participate in interactive workshops, skills training sessions, and mentorship meetings, all designed to enhance your critical thinking, scientific writing, pitching, and collaborative problem-solving. The course concludes with a team research pitch, where you will present your findings to all stakeholders that were present in the initial conference.

Internship opportunities
Selected students who will participate in this course also have the opportunity to undertake a six-month international lab-based unit internship starting in January or February 2027 at the partner universities, allowing them to continue and expand on their research from the course.
