Course goals

Learning goals:
After completing the course the student:
  1. Is able to explain the concepts of bacterial cell signaling including chemotaxis / motility, cell-cell signaling (quorum sensing, biofilms) in relation to pathogenesis
  2. Is able to describe bacterial virulence strategies, such as LPS synthesis, bacterial PAMPs and expression of carbohydrate receptors
  3. Is able to describe bacterial exploitation of host cell biology: mucosal cell entry, transcytosis, intracellular trafficking and survival
  4. Is able to explain the role of (subsets of) bacterial microbiota with respect to (intestinal) health and disease
  5. Knows the key players of host cell defense: innate receptors, innate effectors (neutrophils, complement, collectins, defensins, sIgA, mucus)
  6. Is able to discuss cutting edge information about protein secretion systems, bacterial adhesion, immune evasion strategies and novel antibiotics, phage therapy and vaccine development
  7. Is able to design, pitch and write a proposal for a 9-month research internship project, based on the formulated research question
  8. Can contribute to scientific discussions with lecturers and with other students during interactive elements of the course

Course architecture
The course consists of a series of lectures, master classes, interactive elements and an assignment that covers the above-mentioned topics of infection. Lecturers are internationally well-recognized scientists in the field of bacterial pathogenesis. There is ample time for scientific discussion and debate.

Examination
The course will be concluded with a mandatory written exam which counts as 90% of the final grade. The assignment counts for 10% of the final grade. A final grade of 5.5 or higher is a prerequisite for succeeding in this course.

Literature
The slides of all presented lectures will be made available here on the Brightspace platform, under "Files from the course". These materials form the basis of the course and are the subject of examination.

Registration:
I&I students are automatically registered after acceptance to the programme. Other students (only in exceptional cases) apply via Osiris Student. More information about the registration procedure can be found here on the Students' site. The maximum number of participants is 30.

Mandatory for students in own Master’s programme:
Yes

Optional for students in other GSLS Master’s programme:
