Course goals
- explain the difference between innate and adaptive defences and substantiate them with characteristics of the molecules involved;
- describe the main processes during an inflammatory response and explain the role of different cells and mediators;
- explain the diversity of antigen recognition and explain the principle of selection/clonal deletion;
- describe the main processes, cells, lymphoid organs and cytokines involved in initiating and maintaining the specific immune response;
- explain the principle of flow cytometry and explain simple examples;

Course description:
Deficiency or deregulation of the immune system can lead to a kaleidoscope of clinical features which are genetically determined or induced by infections or cancer therapy. During this course pathogenesis of diseases and novel forms of immune therapy will be discussed.
Lectures and tutorials will focus on four main topics:
1. Immunodeficiencies
2. Chronic inflammation (Autoimmune diseases and atopy)
3. Hematological malignancies
4. HLA typing, organ and stem-cell transplantation

Immunology: A. Abbas et al. Cellular and Molecular Immunology 9th edition 2018, Elsevier, Inc.
Useful other books:
Robbinson - Pathologic Basic of Disease, Alberts - Molecular Biology of the Cell
Registration:
