Course goals
- To recognize the sources, transmission routes and risk factors for zoonotic infections, including foodborne.
- To get acquainted with the (inter)national One Health infrastructure and roles of the different actors, with special attention for zoonoses including food safety.
- To understand the role of genomics in characterizing (zoonotic) pathogens and antimicrobial resistance, and tracing their origins (including metagenomics and resistome)
- To understand the genetic evolution of viruses resulting in change of host range;
- To understand environmental, host and pathogen factors that drive pathogen emergence and spread;
- To design intervention strategies to prevent zoonotic infections;
- To understand the emergence of antimicrobial resistance in pathogens and commensals, and the environmental contamination with antimicrobial residues
- To develop potential interventions in antimicrobial use in animals and humans in different contexts.
- To be able to integrate knowledge, data and methods from human, veterinary and environmental health fields.
Content
Course description:
The Advanced One Health course will focus on infectious diseases. Trends and drivers for the emergence and spread of multispecies diseases (including zoonotic diseases) (e.g. demographic, behaviour, biodiversity loss etc.), surveillance and prevention will be addressed, as well as the basics of infectious disease epidemiology. The role of wildlife and ecosystems, for instance transmission between livestock and wildlife will be included. The emergence of antimicrobial resistance in pathogens and indicator organisms and potential interventions in antimicrobial use will be highlighted. The resistome will be introduced, including transmission of genes between different reservoirs. Risk analysis will be performed, including quantitative microbial risk assessment (e.g. food borne infections).
