Course goals
At the end of this honours programme the student:- is able to acquire knowledge on subjects selected based on their own interests;
- is able to organize masterclasses;
- take up a position and give supporting arguments in the masterclasses;
- has an interdisciplinary scientific view;
- is able to critically reflect on the work of his/her fellow honours students in the field of life sciences;
- is able to translate a Life Sciences problem into a relevant research question;
- is able to design a suitable research plan to investigate the formulated research question, according to international methodological and scientific standards;
- is able to perform research under limited supervision;
- is able to apply experimental techniques relevant to the research question;
- is able to handle, analyse, interpret and evaluate empirically derived data in a correct manner;
- is able to discuss the outcomes of empirical research and link these with scientific theories;
- is able to critically reflect on his/her research in Life Sciences;
- is able to indicate the relevance of his/her research for the field of Life Sciences and for society in general;
- is able to comprehensibly report research results orally and in writing, to an international audience of specialists and people from outside the field.

Course description
U/Select is an extracurricular honours programme for students of the Graduate School of Life Sciences. The U/Select programme takes two years. In the first year the students organise and participate in several masterclasses, e.g. on science and society, ethics or internationalisation. In addition, they will write a research proposal for a major research project at an international university. In the second year, the students execute the general research project abroad. They will receive a €2000 scholarship.
At the end of the honours programme, the students will present their research project during a symposium. A jury of top scientists will select the winner of U/Select, and award a €250 prize.

Students are selected for the honours programme. To apply, send a letter of motivation, plus an extensive CV, proof of your grades (BSc and high school), and a letter of recommendation to USelect@umcutrecht.nl before December 1st. More information about the U/Select programme can be found in the Students’ site.

Prerequisite knowledge
The U/Select programme is open for all students of the Graduate School of Life Sciences. Students are selected on basis of their CV, motivation, grades and letters of recommendation.
