After completen of the course, the student is able to:
  1. Describe and define the scope and principles of global health
  2. Describe social determinants of health
  3. Explain approaches to health equity
  4. Explain health systems approaches for prevention and health care
  5. Describe health related development goals and targets
  6. Describe ethical issues in global health research
  7. Describe legal frameworks for global health, global health governance and global health finance.
  8. Describe the effects of globalization in health
  9. Describe the use of innovation to address global health challenges
  10. Design a strategy for health advocacy and / or diplomacy
  11. Describe current challenges in global health

Registration:
Face-to-Face: Epidemiology students  can register for this course via Osiris Student. More information about the registration procedure can be found here on the Students' site. NOTE Students of the MSc Epidemiology (Post Graduate) that register in time (i.e. at least two weeks before the start of a course) will always be admitted to the course unless it is completely full.
IMPORTANT! Students from other masters programmes need to register via Home | Utrecht Summer School. Costs may be associated with this course.

Course description:
Topics discussed in this interdisciplinary course range from global health governance and policy, to the role of health systems, ethics and advocacy for research and development, to globalization and climate change on health outcomes.

What is global health? Which global health challenges do we face? What are key principles of global health? Who are the major actors in global health and how do they influence global health policy? What are the Sustainable Development Goals and how can they advance addressing major health challenges globally? What is the role of health systems, international partnership, ethical aspects, equity, technological innovation and advocacy for research and development? And what is the impact of migration, globalisation and climate change on health outcomes?

Prerequisite knowledge:
Health professionals/postgraduate students with interest in global health. A basic understanding of epidemiological and global health concepts is a prerequisite for successful course completion.
