This concerns in particular pathophysiological processes in one of the organs, or the incapability of organs to compensate for extreme aberrations of components of the milieu interior or exterior that leads to a serious disturbance of the homeostasis. The first part of the course consists of 3 blocks of 2 weeks, and deals with heart rhythm failures, lung abnormalities, and physiological disturbances of homeostasis. Students will work in groups to discuss research questions concerning pathophysiology (from gene to organism), and present their outcomes in a presentation. In the second part of the course (4 weeks) each student will get an individual assignment that will lead to a thesis. This thesis will be evaluated by other students (peer-reviewing) and discussed during a final session. Requirements for admission: This course builds on the course ¿Organ systems¿. Basic knowledge of the construction and function of the heart, vessels, lungs and kidneys, and their physiological, physical, and chemical principles, is required. Learning outcomes: At the end of the course the student is capable of: ¿ understanding and discussing the principles of heart rhythm and conduction failures; ¿ understanding and discussing the principles of lung abnormalities during heart failures; ¿ understanding and discussing the principles of physiological disturbance of homeostasis. Learning activity and contact time: The total contact time is ¿34 hours, which is 15% of the course. Method(s) of testing: The end grade will be determined as follows: group presentations 3x20%, thesis 40%. Required material (books/costs): Will be handed out during the course.

Inhoud:
Deze cursus wordt aangeboden vanuit het speerpunt ‘Circulatory Health’ en de onderwerpen van dit speerpunt staan centraal in deze cursus. In de cursus richten we ons specifiek op de huidige onderzoeksontwikkelingen bij verschillende hartziekten (o.a. hartfalen, cardiomyopathie en ritmestoornissen). De moleculaire basis, preventie, diagnose en behandeling van deze ziekten worden belicht vanuit onderstaande invalshoeken:

• risicogroepen en –factoren;
• genetische basis;
• moleculaire & cellulaire biologie;
• beeldvormende technieken;
• klinische interventies en therapeutische vernieuwingen;
• preventie & gezondheid;
• regeneratieve geneeskunde.

De eerste vier weken van de cursus bestaan uit hoorcolleges over de onderwerpen die hierboven staan beschreven. Het interpreteren van de wetenschappelijke literatuur die aan bod komt bij de hoorcolleges, wordt schriftelijk getoetst.
Naast kennis over (het onderzoek naar) cardiale pathofysiologie, wordt in deze cursus aandacht besteed aan het communiceren van wetenschappelijke resultaten, zowel in een presentatievorm als in schriftelijke vorm. Hiermee is de cursus ook een voorbereiding op het Research Project in de bachelor van Biomedische Wetenschappen en op de masterprogramma’s van de Graduate School of Life Sciences.
De cursus wordt geheel in het Engels gegeven.

Vereiste voorkennis:
Deze cursus bouwt voort op de cursus ‘Orgaansystemen’. Als zodanig wordt voorkennis verondersteld van de bouw en functie van het hart en de fysiologische, fysische en chemische principes die daarbij ten grondslag liggen.

Leerdoelen:
Kennis en inzicht
Na afloop van de cursus is de student in staat om:

• in het kader van hartziekten de meest recente onderzoeksontwikkelingen te begrijpen en uit te leggen wat betreft de moleculaire basis, preventie, diagnose en behandeling.

Vaardigheden
De student is in staat om:

• een duidelijke en goede boodschap te presenteren aan het publiek (zowel mondeling als schriftelijk);
• primaire literatuur te lezen en te interpreteren samen met medestudenten;
• resultaten uit primaire literatuur te presenteren op een mondelinge of schriftelijke manier (presentatie en essay);
• presentaties en essays van medestudenten te becommentariëren en te beoordelen.

Onderwijsvorm(en) en contacttijd:
In de cursus komen hoorcolleges, journal clubs, en workshops aan bod. Daarnaast gaat de student zelfstandig aan de slag met een pitch, een presentatie en een essay. De cursus bestaat uit ca. 25% contacttijd en 75% zelfstudie.

Toetsvormen:
Het eindcijfer wordt als volgt bepaald:
Toets 20% - (groeps)presentatie 30% - essay 50%. Zowel voor de toets als de presentatie als het essay moet minimaal een 5,5 worden behaald om te kunnen slagen voor de cursus.
Studenten beoordelen ook elkaars presentatie en essay (peer-review).
