Creator Cultures: Media Industries and the Digital Economy Cultures

Course goals
At the end of the course, students can/have:
- critically analyse the global landscape of digital creator cultures by exploring their socio-cultural, economic, and ethical dimensions;
- analyse and engage with platform content and organizational structures, using relevant tools and methods to assess how platforms shape content production, distribution, and community dynamics;
- developed practical skills in content creation through the form of a podcast for a specific platform, tailored to the platform’s technical, cultural, and audience requirements.
Content
This course offers critical reflection on “Creator Cultures,” exploring the global dynamics of digital cultures, digital labor, and creator-driven economies, while also equipping students with practical skills through a variety of creative projects and collaborative activities. The course will cover topics such as the rise of social media influencers, the economics of digital labor, the role of fan communities, and the implications of algorithm-driven content distribution. Students will also engage with case studies from various global contexts, exploring how cultural, political, and economic factors shape creator cultures in different regions.

This course is the fourth course in the CIW specialisation track 'Media, Data en Maatschappij'.
It is also part of the Media and Culture specialisation track 'AI Cultures and Global Digital Society'.
This course has priority rules and a waiting list. Your enrolment is guaranteed if you:
- are a student in the BA CIW, enrolled in the specialisation Media, Data en Maatschappij.
- are a student in the BA Media and Culture, enrolled in the specialisation AI Cultures & Global Digital Society.
- a student TCS enrolled in the hoofdrichting Nieuwe Media en Digitale Cultuur.
For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the students on the waiting list.
