Course goals

Learning objectives
At the end of the course the student is able to:
  • Independently conduct research related to the topic and tasks of the internship;
  • Acquired research skills (e.g., data management, data analysis, primary data collection, conceptual thinking, or literature analysis) that are related to the topic and tasks of the internships.

Content

The course Research Internship offers Honours students the opportunity to conduct research under the supervision of faculty members of the Utrecht University School of Economics (U.S.E.). During the internship, students will conduct a specific set of tasks related to the topic of the internship. By completing a Research Internship, Honours students are expected to be better prepared for the Honours Thesis. In addition, students gain a better understanding of how professional research is conducted and what the requirements are. Since all internships are provided by faculty members of U.S.E., the topics of the internships are aligned with U.S.E.’s real world perspective.

The number of internships that are available might differ from year to year. We seek to provide internships from all major research areas within U.S.E. (Economics, Applied Economics, Finance, Entrepreneurship). Some internships may be multidisciplinary (i.e., combining economics with other disciplines such as mathematics, data science, geoscience, social science).
Available internships will be published on the Honours page of the Brightspace environment in June. Students need to apply for the internship positions. The exact application procedure and requirements are provided on the Brightspace environment and may vary per internship.

Subscription for the course: send an email to the course coordinator (Coen Rigtering).

Format
Students are expected to invest between 8 and 12 hours per week in the internship (except during exam weeks). Some internships might require that students primarily work at U.S.E. or on external locations.

Assessment method
  • Students receive a “pass” or a “fail” for the internship. The student’s performance is assessed by the U.S.E. faculty member that supervises the internship.
