Course goals

Learning objectives
The aim of this course is to provide students with the knowledge and skills they require to effectively deal with concepts, theories and methods in business economics.

At the end of the course the student should be able to:
  • Provide an overview of the main theoretical concepts in business economics research;
  • Master a topic of her/his choice within the domain of business economics;
  • Use advanced methods that are necessary to conduct research in the field of business economics;
  • Develop her/his writing skills to engage in academic research.

Content

Students who are not enrolled in the research master Multidisciplinary Economics should contact the course coordinator for enrollment in this course.

This course develops students' ability to absorb, analyse and apply state-of-the-art academic knowledge about business economics. The course will primarily be concerned with business economic theory, but – in line with the multidisciplinary focus of the Utrecht University School of Economics – also captures elements from psychology, gender, finance and policy literatures.

Students will familiarise themselves with selected theoretical and empirical topics in business economics, equip themselves to do their own research in the field of business economics, and learn how to apply theory in practical situations. After a series of interactive lectures and discussions, students will focus on a topic of their interest, and study and analyse relevant literature for two challenges: writing a review report and design a suitable research plan to answer one (or more) research question(s).

This course complements the courses Advanced Corporate Finance and Experiments in Economics and Business.

Format
Lectures and discussions on the basis of lectures and the reading material is the main teaching method. Students will work on a research proposal in the area of business economics.

Intended Learning Outcomes
The graduate:
  • develops as an independent academic, formulating research questions, and answering them.
  • has knowledge of multidisciplinary aspects of their own research specialization.
