Course goals
At the end of the course, the student is able to:
- Analyse pressing development problems by applying state-of-the-art theories and empirical methods from the frontier of development economics;
- Critically design and evaluate causal-inference designs, such as randomised controlled trials, difference-in-differences, regression discontinuity, and instrumental variables — as deployed in leading development papers;
- Critically assess the work of peers and academic researchers in a rigorous and constructive scholarly manner.
Content
Students who are not enrolled in the research master Multidisciplinary Economics should contact the course coordinator for enrollment in this course.
The course will cover the state-of-the-art in theory and evidence on seminal topics in development economics such as education, financial markets, trade, and technology adoption, but will also address conflict, the history of development, and gender. The course is coordinated and lectured by Prof. Erwin Bulte from Wageningen University and Research (WUR) and Dr. Karlijn Morsink from Utrecht University School of Economics (UU). Prominent Dutch and International academics in development economics specialized in the various research areas will provide guest lectures and present on-going work.
Prerequisite knowledge:
Students are expected to have sufficient knowledge of microeconomics, macroeconomics and econometrics at a master level. That can be demonstrated by:
10 EC microeconomics related courses (Advanced micro, behavioural economics)
5 EC econometrics I, econometrics II, advanced causal inference (or academic master level)
5 EC (macroeconomics) all at master level
