The Making of Modernity: Literature in English 1660-1850

Course goals

After successful completion of the course, students

  • are capable of analyzing Anglophone literary texts
  • have an understanding of the interconnections between these texts and their broader contexts
  • are capable of reporting on their reading experience in written English, using appropriate literary terminology
  • in their writing, showing their grasp of the historical perspective

Content

This course seeks to explore the period 1660-1850, the crucible of modernity and a time of seminal change in understandings of categories of existence including race, gender, sexuality, class, empire, capital, and nature. Tracking a variety of ongoing controversies and dialogues in English-language writing produced around the world, it introduces students to a wide range of diverse writers and provides a rich overview of a broad swathe of literary history.

Please note: the time slot shown here is not yet final and may still be modified until the 3rd Wednesday in September. 

This course has priority rules and a waiting list. Your enrolment is guaranteed if you are:

  • a student in the BA English Language and Culture  
  • a student TCS enrolled in the hoofdrichting Moderne Talen: Engels.
  • an exchange student and meet the course’s entry requirements 

In all other situations, you will be placed on a waiting list if you enrol in this course. For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the students on the waiting list.  

This course is equivalent to the following courses:
Milton to the Millennium (EN2V17003)
The Making of Modernity (EN3V23003)

If you have already completed this course, you may not take The Making of Modernity due to too much overlap in content.
