Learning Outcomes:
Upon successfully completing this course, students will be capable of:
• analyzing the fictional worlds of Renaissance drama and the early modern contexts that inspired the creation of these worlds;
• reporting on their research in written English, while showing their grasp of the historical perspective. In addition, they should feel that they are familiar with key topics in current Renaissance drama studies.

Content

This course centres around the works of Shakespeare and his contemporaries. Several genres will be covered, including tragedy, comedy and closet drama. Although the works of Shakespeare are placed centre stage, important works by other early modern authors are also discussed, thereby creating a diverse and nuanced understanding of the literary and performative cultures of the early modern period.
