Course goals

The course aims to introduce students to language teaching as a principled pedagogical practice grounded in observation, design, and reflective decision-making. Rather than training students in specific teaching techniques, the course develops their ability to analyze, design, adapt, and justify language teaching practices using established theoretical frameworks and empirical observation.
By the end of the course, students are able to:
  • understand how learner characteristics and learning conditions shape language learning
  • analyze teacher roles and classroom interaction patterns
  • interpret language teaching methods as structured pedagogical ideas
  • design coherent, goal-oriented language lessons
  • observe classrooms using ethnographic methods and translate observation into pedagogical analysis
  • adapt instruction and assessment responsively during teaching
  • critically evaluate the pedagogical use of AI in language education
  • articulate and justify teaching decisions using appropriate theoretical language
The course prepares students for further study in language education, teacher training, or applied linguistics by emphasizing how pedagogical reasoning works, not by prescribing fixed instructional models.
