Advanced pharmacokinetics

Course goals

At the end of the course, students can
- relate chemical structure and physicochemical characteristics of drugs to biopharmaceutical and pharmacokinetic properties concerning absorption, distribution and elimination
- design a plan for bioanalysis of drug molecules
- perform pharmacokinetic analysis with different mathematical models and calculation tools
- interpret and discuss pharmacokinetic problems

Content

The course FA-BA315 Advanced Pharmacokinetics is an elective course of the bachelor in Pharmacy; it is a level 3 course (advanced) requiring pre-existing knowledge and experience in the field of pharmacokinetics. For students of the bachelor in Pharmacy, UU, the first-year course FA-BA105 Pharmacokinetics is a prerequisite. Most importantly, we expect you to be acquainted with the basic concepts of pharmacokinetics and to have an intrinsic motivation to delve deeper into this subject!
Study materials and assignments of this course will be closely related to ongoing and past research projects of lecturers/researchers that have contributed to the course. Topics that will be addressed can be different from year to year, and will include:
• Pharmacokinetic compartmental and non-compartmental analysis
• analysis of drug levels in biological samples
• drug metabolism
• pharmacokinetic and/or toxicokinetic modeling
• clinical pharmacokinetics
