Course goals

After the course you will be able to:
·      Understand the basics of common analytical tools
·      Design and conduct analytical experiments (qualitative and quantitative) based on research questions
·      Analyse experimental data critically and use the outcomes to further adjust experiments in order to answer your research questions convincingly
·      Present (spoken and written) experimental data in a scientific manner
The focus of FA-CPS223 is the use of antibodies (Western blot, ELISA and flow cytometry), however, other techniques will also be available.
Keywords: chromatography, electrophoresis, spectroscopy, mass spectrometry, NMR, immunoassays, flow cytometry, method validation, lab book, lab safety, design and conduct experiments, chemical calculations, data handling, statistics, reproducibility

Content

In this course you will learn a few basic analytical tools and you are challenged to design methods using these tools in order to investigate three alleged crime scenes. Three casualties will be reported and samples will be available in order to solve the problem: what happened to these people? The projects will be introduced during the course. As in real life, not all information will be available from the start of the CSI cases. Additional information will become available as the projects progress. You have to design and carry out all your experiments in small teams (approx. 4 students). Meetings have been scheduled to explain your plans in order to get feedback from teachers and fellow students. Supervisors will be available during the experiments, however, your experiments have to be well prepared and written down in your laboratory notebooks.

Besides the design and performance of experiments, you will have lectures and seminars.

Additional information

CPS courses contain Honors elements that provide academic depth and breadth to students. Depending on the course, this means that you take in extra information, complete special assignments or work intensively on your academic skills. It often involves a combination of these elements. Teachers expect greater independence, challenge you and, where possible, give you freedom of choice in the topics you work on and the way you complete the assignments. The group assignments focus on the application, creation and integration of knowledge.
