Course goals
- Understand the technologies driving cutting-edge research is cancer genomics, proteomics, and metabolomics
- Explain the hallmarks of cancer and how they manifest in real-life patient data
- Read, analyse, and interpret research articles in the field of omics
- Apply omics technologies to gain insights into cancer biology
- Perform basic data analysis and visualization using programming tools.
In addition, you will also develop and practice competences relevant to working in international settings and becoming global citizens, such as:
- Cross-cultural communication skills in interdisciplinary collaboration
- An inclusive mindset, with the ability to work in diverse cultural contexts
- Digital competences, including the ability to collaborate efficiently online using digital tools
- Constructively engaging with differences, including linguistic variations and demographic diversity
- Critical thinking and leadership skills.
Content
The course will be a combination of omics technologies and the basic concepts of oncology. You will learn not only the technological aspects of the different omics fields (genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, & metabolomics), but also how to analyse real omics data with bioinformatics. From a cancer biology perspective, you will learn how these technologies are applied to the field of oncology to answer some of the biggest questions in cancer treatment. For example: how can omics data be used to guide precision medicine in cancer treatment? How can we find biomarkers in patient biopsies? How can we understand which cellular networks drive cancer development? What drives resistance to targeted therapy?
The course will be held as a virtual exchange between two international partner universities: Utrecht University and Zurich University. In this collaborative online international experience, students will remain at their respective institutions but attend an international course using synchronous and asynchronous interactions. This set up will promote the creation of a dynamic international community among students and teachers.
