Course goals

•             Knowledge of recent discussions regarding general philosophy of science (master level)
•             Skills: handle primary source texts in philosophy of science; presenting such a text in class, possibly in collaboration with a fellow student; constructively contribute to an academic discussion in a group on the material covered; write clear short texts on the material covered.
•             Attitudes: being able to reflect critically on scientific knowledge from a meta-perspective; engage critically with a text.

Content

This course addresses central subjects in the philosophy of science, including 1) the relation between theory and evidenceapproaches to explanation; 2) causation; 3) epistemology (social, feminist, French) 4) emergence and reduction in the social, natural, and life sciences .
