Course goals

The student:
- learns to distinguish basic ethical theories and what core characteristics each has
- is able to relate core theoretical concepts and notions to practical debates
- learns basic philosophical methodology: analytic reading skills, argumentation and writing a philosophical paper
- learns to argue and structure debate in ethical issues.
- learns more about the interdisciplinary perspective that applied ethics often takes in practice and what this implies for each participating student
This is an introductory course; basic philosophical theories and methodology will be presented and related to current debates and literature in bioethics. Normative theories as consequentialism, Kantianism, Contractualism, Capabilities Approach, Care ethics and Virtue Ethics will be dealt with and related to current debate. The course will combine core readings with literature that reflect current debate in practical ethics. So for example, we might look at developments in synthetic biology, medical technology or agricultural issues from different conceptual angles and learn what normative issues rise and are discussed in different fields of application.

LAS and TCS students who follow this course as part of the core curriculum of their major, need to complete a compulsory preparation course/assignment. See for more information: https://tcs.sites.uu.nl/
