Course goals

By the end of this course, students will:
  • Acquire a solid understanding of key theoretical and methodological debates, as well as research methods, within religious studies.
  • Critically evaluate and articulate their position on theoretical, methodological, and ethical issues related to conducting research in religious studies.
  • Apply theoretical and methodological frameworks to design and execute their own research project.
  • Communicate their research effectively, both orally and in writing, with clarity and a constructive approach.

Content

This course provides an introduction to major theoretical debates, central themes, and diverse methodological approaches in the academic study of religion. Through class discussions, presentations, and weekly assignments, students develop the skills to critically evaluate and position themselves in relation to key theories and methods in religious studies. Additionally, the course guides students in applying these insights to develop, design, and conduct their own research projects. The findings will be presented both orally, during a student conference at the end of the course, and in written form as an academic paper. Special emphasis is placed on the topics of diversity, globalization, and migration.
