Course goals

  • Students are able to use various research tools and techniques;
  • Students are able to present their own research orally and in writing;
  • Students are able to participate in discussions with international scholars, and to engage in informal conversions with them; 
  • Students are familiar with the codes of conduct regarding scholarly integrity.

Content

In this course, students acquire and practice skills that are essential for work in an academic setting. The course consists of different components. In the (bi-weekly) seminars, we will discuss topics such as peer review, research communication to a non-specialist audience, research ethics and integrity, how to connect theory with your empirical findings, how to write a journal article, and how to write a good thesis. We will also engage in a close reading of a number of key texts, and make short excursions. In the research colloquia and lunch meetings, students enter into discussion with senior scholars and PhD candidates who present their latest research. In addition, students attend conferences and guest lectures by international scholars. 

Career orientation:
Students acquire and practice skills that are essential for work in an academic setting: research, discussion, oral presentations, writing, scholarly integrity and building a network.
