Content
Certain research projects in Religious Studies involve fieldwork, such as studying religious groups and institutions. Students opting for fieldwork will have the opportunity to develop and refine their empirical research skills by employing anthropological methods and techniques. Fieldwork is conducted as part of a research project based on a detailed proposal written by the student under the guidance of a professor or senior researcher. Before beginning fieldwork, students will receive preparation and training from their fieldwork supervisor (see Fieldwork Guidelines). During the fieldwork period, students are expected to complete assignments and maintain regular communication with their supervisor.
By the end of the first year of the Research Master in Religious Studies (RMA), all students will have completed a research proposal. If a student wishes to change their thesis topic and include fieldwork, they must write a new research proposal. Ideally, the fieldwork supervisor should also serve as the RMA thesis supervisor. Students are responsible for organizing their fieldwork, with support from their supervisor.
Approval to undertake fieldwork is contingent on the following conditions:
• The research proposal must be approved;
• The feasibility and safety of the project in the chosen location must be positively assessed by the supervisor and program coordinator;
• Fieldwork must be essential for completing the MA thesis.
Fieldwork offers a valuable opportunity to integrate theoretical ideas with empirical research, challenging students to bridge academic concepts with real-world insights. For further information, refer to the Fieldwork Guidelines (available on Brightspace at the time of writing). If you cannot locate the guidelines, please contact the RMA Religious Studies coordinator.
