Beschrijving
Course goals
- You have gained knowledge about the principles and definitions of cultural diplomacy
- You learned about the historical emergence and development of American cultural diplomacy from the early twentieth century to the present
- You are able to evaluate the principles of cultural diplomacy as a form of soft power in relation to traditional instruments of diplomacy and foreign policy
Content
This course invites you to consider public opinions of, and reactions to, the Cold War, through the lenses of Sport, Music, Energy and Activism, both " in front of" and "behind" the Iron Curtain.
Using specific case-studies and examples (like the Olympic Games and boycotts, the Summit Series, Woodstock, protests against nuclear weapons, underground printing presses and music, and more), supplemented by illuminating primary and secondary sources, you are shown a "bottom-up" interpretation of the Cold War and asked to assess the level to which these case-studies enhance our understanding and perception of the world divided, not only between "communism" and "capitalism," but between those "in power" and those "under power."
The main focus of this course is how peoples in the US and Canada, in addition and in contrast to peoples in Europe (East and West) and Asia, expressed their perceptions of the Cold War world.
