Course goals
Learning outcomes:
- The goal is to build upon and integrate the critical analytical skills and theoretical knowledge acquired in the previous three BA-minor course modules, deepening the understanding of the relationship between the processes of constructing violence and fostering peaceful coexistence. This involves recognising that the dynamics of armed conflict and peacebuilding do not follow a linear sequence (i.e., ‘peace’ succeeding ‘war’) but can coexist concurrently in dynamic, diachronic ways. In this regard, all four modules of the Minor-CS curriculum are designed to be cumulative and interconnected.
- The course aims to introduce and deepen students' understanding of key theories, concepts, analytical approaches, practices, and themes associated with the study and practice of (re)building and (re)shaping peaceful coexistence in the aftermath of armed conflict.
- Students will learn to critically examine the normative foundations, meanings, orientations, and practices of (re)building peaceful coexistence, while also challenging the normative, Western-centric, top-down assumptions that often underpin theories, policies, and practices in much of the international peace studies literature, including "problem-solving" approaches. Special attention will be given to “de-colonising” or exploring “non-Western” perspectives on peacebuilding, considering experiences at both macro and micro levels across different contexts, times, and cultures. It is essential to recognise that conflict aftermaths are not solely the result of foreign or international interventions but can also arise from civil wars with little or no direct foreign involvement.
- Students will also develop sensitivity to not only macro-processes but also the micropolitics of local actors’ communal, home-grown initiatives. These actors play a crucial role in the reconstruction, reshaping, and re-envisioning of their war-torn communities.
- Through a group presentation and an individual assignment, students will enhance their ability to plan, produce, and communicate critical arguments and assessments as they engage with ideas, policies, and practices from both academic and practitioner perspectives. The group presentation will require students to design and pitch a hypothetical peacebuilding project set in a chosen time period, culture, and context.
Content
Analytically, this course will address specific themes of peacebuilding through an analytical framework consisting of four interactive processes whose dynamics, practices, underlying assumptions, values, and meanings may reinforce or contradict each other at different socio-political levels of analysis. These are:
- Structural processes involving the building or altering of institutions, mechanisms, orders (socio-political, economic, symbolic, moral), and power structures that facilitate conditions for peaceful coexistence;
- Actions concerning the initiating of activities and acting in ways that further the (re)construction or (re)consolidation of society towards peaceful coexistence;
- Processes involving the transformation of attitudes and perceptions between groups and/or individuals towards acceptance of peaceful coexistence;
- Observable improvement of relations between parties in a direction that fosters peaceful coexistence.
