Course goals

After completing the course, you will have acquired/be able to:

substantive knowledge of the subject area within the specialisation (learning trajectory 1: knowledge acquisition);
formulate a question (learning trajectory 4: research methods);
embed a question in historiographical and theoretical terms (learning trajectory 2: historiographical context and positioning);
apply the correct research methods and techniques on the basis of primary source material (learning trajectory 4: research methods);
conduct research autonomously on the basis of (mostly) in-depth, secondary literature (learning trajectory 4: research methods);
give and process peer and other feedback (learning trajectory 7: orientation on further education and the labour market).

Content

In this course, you will develop as a researcher. You learn to formulate a central claim within a specific historical theme. You learn to embed that claim in a broader historiographical debate and you experiment extensively with the use of source corpuses to support that claim. Research is rarely a linear process. Moreover, it is a matter of trial and error. This course is therefore not just about the final product, but is just as much about your reflection on the process towards it. As the Irish writer James Joyce once stated, 'Mistakes are the portals of discovery'.

This course has priority rules and a waiting list. Your enrolment is guaranteed if you:

Are a student in the BA History and this course is part of your specialisation (verdiepingspakket)
Are a student in the BA Liberal Arts and Sciences or Taal- en Cultuurstudies and this course is part of your specialisation (kernpakket)

In all other situations, you will be placed on a waiting list if you enrol in this course. For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the BA Geschiedenis and History students on the waiting list. Students from other programmes will be unenrolled from the course.

This is the third course of Specialisation 3:The Power of Culture (Track History).
