Course goals
- substantive knowledge of the subject area within the specialisation (learning trajectory 1: knowledge acquisition);
- embed a question in historiographical and theoretical terms (learning trajectory 2: historiographical context and positioning);
- apply the correct research methods and techniques on the basis of primary source material (learning trajectory 4: research methods);
- conduct research autonomously (learning trajectory 4: research methods);
- report on research in a coherent research paper (learning trajectory 6: communication and writing skills);
- give and process peer and other feedback (learning trajectory 7: orientation on further education and the labour market).
Content
In this course, you will further develop as a historical researcher. The lecturer introduces you to the field of a specific historical topic, and gives direction on possible historiographical frameworks, analytical frameworks and source corpuses. First, you will write a research proposal. Once this is approved by the lecturer, you conduct the research and write a research paper of 4000-5000 words step by step. Throughout the course, under the lecturers guidance, you will work individually on your research, while at the same time giving, receiving and processing feedback in groups on the research from yourself and your fellow students.

This course has priority rules and a waiting list. Your enrolment is guaranteed if you:
- Are a student in the BA History and this course is part of your specialisation (verdiepingspakket)
- Are a student in the BA Liberal Arts and Sciences or Taal- en Cultuurstudies and this course is part of your specialisation (kernpakket)
In all other situations, you will be placed on a waiting list if you enrol in this course. For any remaining slots in the course, lots are drawn among the BA Geschiedenis and History students on the waiting list. Students from other programmes will be unenrolled from the course.
