Course goals

The course will enable the students
(1) to acquire a wider knowledge of how the 'Middle East' was invented as a geostrategic category between 1798 and 1945,
(2) to have a deeper awareness of the role European empires played in the shaping of the region,
(3) to observe the processes through which Middle Eastern oil industry came to be controlled by Western big capital in the early twentieth century,
(4) to develop new critical thinking skills

This course is part of the minor Middle East and the Specialisation package 'Middle East'. No prior knowledge of the Middle East and history is necessary to successfully complete this course module.
