After this course, you will be able to:
  • Describe and reflect on the multidisciplinary character of Global Sustainability Science.
  • Interpret and assess the opportunities and limitations of doing multidisciplinary research in Sustainability Science.
  • Classify and carry out analysis using a variety of the most important basic quantitative and qualitative research methods for conducting empirical research in Sustainability Science.
  • Explain and make judgements about appropriate research techniques and strategies in a given situation.
  • Interpret the findings of empirical research, as well as make predictions and draw conclusions about the meaning and limitations of research findings.

Content

This course deals with the methodological aspects of empirical research. Empirical research uses empirical evidence, which means that you gain knowledge through observation or experience. In this course, students will learn how to develop a good research question and how to answer this question in a structured and verifiable manner by means of observation, measurement and analyses.
 
This course includes an Honours component

This course is an entry requirement for
  • Global Transformation Project (GEO2-2417)
  • Bachelor’s thesis GSS (GEO3-2422)
  • Ecological Field Research (GEO2-2439)
  • Full participation in this course is required for Statistics GSS (GEO2-2428)
