Course goals

After completion of the course, students are able to:
  • explain the basic concepts related to organisations and organisation theory and how organisations relate to their environments
  • evaluate how the learned theories explain different organisational phenomena.
  • apply the learned theories to explain how organisations operate, decide or are designed under specific circumstances
  • understand the differences between more conventional organizations and alternative forms of organizing, including those with a focus on sustainability.
  • write up case study findings in a coherent and concise manner

Content

When studying organizations, different social science disciplines do not merely define this concept, they propose theories about why organizations exist, how they operate, how they can be structured, how they develop, how they interact with their external environment, and how they innovate. Insights into different organization theories are thus crucial for the understanding of a wide array of social science theories that build on the notion of organizations.

During the eight weeks of this course, we will study seminal theories concerning different facets of organizations: stakeholders, structure and culture, strategy, and lifecycle and change. Towards the end of the course, we will also study some alternative ways of organizing, such as cooperatives, social enterprises and steward-owned organizations. During the course, the students make three case study assignments, where they analyze existing organizations using the theories learned in the course. The course is concluded with a final exam during week nine.

This course is an entry requirement for:
  • Innovation Strategies of Firms and Entrepreneurs (GEO3-2221)
