Course goals

This course is part of the bachelor Global Sustainability Science and fits within the track Governance and Societal Transformations. This course offers an introduction into EU environmental law. The aim of the course is on the one hand to offer insights into how the law can stimulate or hamper societal transformations and on the other hand to enable students to acquire basic legal skills. The specific course and learning goals are:
- Understand basic legal concepts (e.g. public law, private law), interpretation methods, legal institutions
- Acquire basic legal skills: analysing legislation and case law, practicing legal arguing and solving legal questions
- Understand the (relative) importance of environmental law in solving environmental problems.
- Acquire knowledge of and insight in the structure and content of European environmental law and the interplay between international, European and national environmental law.
- Gain knowledge about some specific areas of environmental law, e.g.: biodiversity protection and climate change.
