Course goals

Please note: the information in the course manual is binding.

The objective of the course is to understand the principles of Agroecology, and how they can be applied for the development of more sustainable farming systems.

After completion of the course, the student is able to:

-Identify and understand agroecological principles and how they can be translated into farming practices.
-Select and use indicators to assess the ecological functioning and sustainability of farming systems.
-Basic understanding of data collection (field work) and laboratory analysis.
-Applying statistical analyses to understand effects of farming practices.

-Re-design farming systems based on agroecological principles and practices.

Content

The course focuses on agroecological principles to analyse and design sustainable and productive farming systems. Agroecological principles include: Recycling and efficiency; Living Soils; Biodiversity; Ecosystem services and multi-functionality; Resilience; Fair Markets, Agro(eco)nomical principles. Students will explore how agroecological farming systems are developed across the world, and how principles can be applied and translated into adaptive farming practices and management. There will be a strong focus on methods, approaches and indicators and applying analytical (statistical) analysis on datasets, assessing and understanding mechanisms that regulate the ecological functioning of farming systems. In addition, students will apply some methodologies to the (re)design of agroecological farming systems.
