Course goals

Na het afronden van deze cursus heeft de BSc-student(e):

1. elementaire aardwetenschappelijke kennis van zeeniveauveranderingen, (paleo)klimaat, de geologie van Nederland, natuurrampen en natuurlijke hulpbronnen;
2. een goed overzicht en begrip van de verschillende fysisch-geografische regio’s en landschapstypen op aarde, hun ontstaanswijze en de wijze waarop deze landschappen zich momenteel ontwikkelen onder invloed van natuurlijke processen en menselijke activiteiten;
3. fysisch-geografisch inzicht in door de mens veroorzaakte klimaatverandering;
4. de academische vaardigheid om zelfstandig onderdelen van de empirische (aard)wetenschappelijke onderzoekscyclus te doorlopen, waaronder het formuleren van een onderzoekbare vraag, het ontwerpen van een praktijkonderzoek, het verzamelen en analyseren van gegevens en het rapporteren van de resultaten.

Content

The course examines the interactions between humans and landscapes from a physical-geographical perspective and focuses on natural processes, natural resources, and natural hazards across different spatial and temporal scales. The following topics are covered:

introduction to human–landscape interactions and physical-geographical systems approaches (including DPSIR);
arid and tropical environments and their landscape-forming processes;
endogenic and exogenic natural hazards and their impacts on society and landscapes;
mountain building and tectonic processes;
river systems, coastal systems, and deltas;
sea-level change and coastal development, with particular attention to the Netherlands;
dune landscapes and coastal dynamics;
natural resources and their formation, distribution, and use;
human-induced climate change and interactions between climate and landscapes;
applications of physical-geographical knowledge in societal contexts;
introduction to philosophy of science and the role of physical geography within scientific research.

In addition, the course includes practical components such as computer-based practicals on river and coastal systems, the application of basic statistical skills, and the analysis of spatial data for landscape interpretation and the evaluation of human–environment interactions.
